This is the first of four linked workshops offering a full grounding in manuscript gilding – using traditional and contemporary methods of laying different metals.  Here we will talk about tools and materials, some of which are difficult to source, and then look at how to make your own glair, garlic juice, gum ammoniacum and then how to lay gold leaf on these mordants.  We will also find out how to make your own shell gold for painting with.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and although it may feature lettering – painters can use any of these methods.  It is not suitable for gilding on furniture, mirrors, etc.
