Design for Calligraphy and Lettering – a series of four linked workshops exploring various approaches to ‘design’ – not just about layout, but considering all the elements necessary to bring a composition to a conclusion: choices of placement, contrast, colour, rhythm, movement, balance, emphasis, and styles of scripts or any decorative aspects.  There’s so much more to think about than just which script and where to position the words.  The sessions will introduce different ways of looking at the process, with the chance to have a go at all of them to find which suits you best.  These alternative methods will offer you a whole new perspective as well as the confidence to try new and different things – giving your work an innovative boost.

Wednesday, 17th April 2024 Design for Calligraphy and Lettering I – Traditional Guidelines – This is the first in a series of four linked sessions about Design, which will consider a number of traditional guidelines that have served us well for centuries – how they can help us make informed decisions and how to break the rules to achieve less formal or predictable designs.  There will be short activities to complete within the session and exercises to try at home as well.

Wednesday, 1st May 2024 – Design for Calligraphy and Lettering II – A Graphics ApproachThe second session in a series of four about Design, which will consider a graphics approach to the design process.  We’ll consider spatial relationships, proportional strategies and the appropriateness of illustration and styles of decoration, doing a few easy exercises and lots of looking at examples to decipher what’s going on design-wise.

Wednesday, 15th May 2024 – Design for Calligraphy and Lettering III – Gestalt Visual PerceptionThis is the third in a series of four linked sessions about Design, which explores the way we look at the entire piece of work with eyes that do all sorts of things.  We’ll pick these apart and consider how they help us in developing our own designs.  There will be a few activities to do during the session which relate to the creative process.

Wednesday, 29th May 2024 – Design for Calligraphy and Lettering IV – The Creative Process The fourth and final session in a series of workshops about Design, which goes into detail about the creative process from a more personal point of view.  We will consider this process in detail, looking at each stage – relating them to our own experiences when undertaking a piece of work, and also ask the question – what makes a design ‘good’?  There’ll be a couple of practical activities and a final discussion to bring all elements of the linked workshops on design together.
