This term we’re going to look at a couple of traditional techniques and then there are two very different workshops – one for inspiration and the other a brand new approach to an old script.

Saturday, 28th September 2024 – Stretching, Treating and Working on Vellum

An introduction to the use of vellum for calligraphy, illumination and particular bindings. There’ll be demonstrations of several ways to stretch it to avoid buckling when using wet mediums, then different treatments to make it wonderful to work on, and lastly a discussion about erasures and the best mediums to use. Finally we’ll look at what other artists have created using vellum.

Wednesday, 16th October 2024 – Curing and Cutting Quills Successfully

Learn how to successfully cure and cut quills that really will write well. We’ll explore ways of curing the feathers, and then how to cut them to be suitable for right or left-handers and also for particular scripts. And – because they often don’t work efficiently to start off with, we’ll troubleshoot the likely problems.

Saturday, 26th October 2024 – Artists’ Creative Inspiration for Calligraphers.

Are you ever stuck for ideas, or do you sometimes hit a block half way through a piece of work? During this workshop we’ll look at a wide range of artists’ paintings as references for style, proportion, colour and ambience to help us kick-start the creative process and develop a fresh approach to our own calligraphic creations.

Wednesday, 13th November 2024 – Pointed Pen Carolingian

Learn a new approach to the classic Carolingian script – using a pointed nib. This workshop will demonstrate how to achieve a fair representation of a historical model of the hand and then various ways of personalising it – whether to be more Uncialified or Itilicised – the pointed pen gives us the opportunity to gain a different kind of flow to this time-honoured script. You’ll achieve your own individual version, using a range of variable characteristics such as different serifs, ligatures, weight and compression.
