Stretching, Treating and Working on Vellum

This workshop introduces the use of vellum, which refers to calf-skin, for calligraphy, illumination and particular bindings. We will first consider the qualities of vellum and the advantages of using it. There’ll be demonstrations of three ways to stretch it to avoid buckling when using wet mediums, then four different treatments to make it wonderful to work on, and lastly a discussion about erasures and the best mediums to use. Finally we’ll look at what other artists have created using vellum.
